Inc: New Survey - Coronavirus May Cause a Slowdown in Tech and Auto Manufacturing

A new survey conducted by Thomas, a marketing and data platform for the manufacturing industry, of 755 North American manufacturing companies found that the COVID-19 outbreak in Asia has started to impact manufacturing supply chains in the Western hemisphere. The report found 60 percent of North American companies it surveyed are affected in some way by China's disrupted supply chains and limited production output.   Read more >

Thomas' Tony Uphoff, president & CEO gave the keynote address at Catalyst Connection’s Fifth Annual Manufacturing and Student Video Reception. His message defined the manufacturing industry today with great promise for the younger generation.  “It’s a phenomenal career opportunity,” Uphoff said. “I’d like to encourage them. I don’t think they have the biases that other generations do…but I also want to speak to some of the parents in the room…It’s a different business. It’s not white collar or blue collar. Cloud Wars Podcast: Industry 4.0: Apple, Amazon, and Google are Manufacturers - Episode 10

In this month's episode, Tony discusses why 2020 will be the year when industry 4.0 takes off. The increase of products and services such as robotics, advanced manufacturing systems, additive manufacturing (a/k/a 3D printing), electronic components and sensors, have all finally converged.

As part of Industry 4.0, 5G will play a major role, opening up information in volumes we never dreamed of before. 5G, connected to additive manufacturing, will put small manufacturing facilities closer to a company’s customers.

Tony also proposes that Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are all manufacturers. In a different era, we might have said, “no, they’re software companies.” But enabling technologies are allowing us to rethink what qualifies as a manufacturing company.
